Renaissance Chinese Opera Society
The Renaissance Chinese Opera Society (RCOS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving traditional Chinese opera in the United States. It was founded in 1984 by Feng Shi Jea in New York City.
Mission
The organization seeks to introduce Chinese classical opera, including Beijing and Kunqu opera, to the multicultural landscape of American life. Its mission includes educating new audiences about the rich cultural heritage of Chinese opera, fostering an appreciation for this art form among both Chinese communities abroad and broader American society.
History
Over the years, RCOS has performed at over 350 venues across North America. Following the founder's retirement, Ms. Yong-Hong Jia became the president of the organization. She continues to pursue the late Shu (Eric) Ho's dream of promoting Chinese opera in the United States.
Activities
The society is active in training new talents alongside professional performances. The artists involved often hold other jobs to support themselves, as opportunities to earn a living solely from Chinese opera are limited in the U.S. Despite these challenges, RCOS provides a platform for these artists to engage with their primary passion.
The organization has also been involved in various educational and community activities, including teaching singing, dancing, acting, Kunqu, and Peking Opera. Ms. Jia, a renowned opera performer herself, has led these educational endeavors.
Impact
Through its performances and educational programs, RCOS has played a significant role in preserving and promoting Chinese cultural heritage. By bringing Chinese opera to diverse audiences across America, it contributes to the cultural mosaic of the country.
Leadership
The current president, Yong-Hong Jia, is a respected figure in the world of Chinese opera, known for her contributions both as a performer and as an educator. Her leadership ensures the continuation of the society's mission to promote Chinese opera and cultural values in the U.S.
Registration
Renaissance Chinese Opera Society is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with EIN 82-2046252.
