Old Pueblo Archaeology Center

Introduction

The Old Pueblo Archaeology Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich archaeological heritage of the American Southwest. As a 501(c)(3) organization, it focuses on educational programs, site preservation, and community involvement in archaeology.

History and Programs

Established over two decades ago, the center has been instrumental in promoting archaeological awareness through various programs. These include guided tours of archaeological excavation sites, historical and cultural sites across the Southwest, such as the Hopi and Zuñi Pueblo areas, Canyon de Chelly, Casa Grande Ruins, Chaco Canyon, and the Gila Cliff Dwellings. The center also conducts educational workshops and classes, including topics like flintknapping and the study of prehistoric pottery.

Educational Initiatives

The center offers numerous educational initiatives, including archaeology classes for adults and children. Notable classes include the study of Hohokam pottery, where participants learn about the different types and attributes of this ancient craft. These educational programs are designed to engage both local communities and visitors, enhancing understanding and appreciation of the region's cultural and historical significance.

Community Engagement and Volunteer Opportunities

Old Pueblo Archaeology Center encourages public participation through volunteer excavation programs, allowing individuals to assist professional archaeologists in field excavations. This hands-on approach helps foster a deeper connection with the archaeological sites and their history.

Mission

The mission of the Old Pueblo Archaeology Center revolves around education, preservation, and the promotion of cultural awareness. By collaborating with local communities and highlighting the archaeological wealth of the Southwest, the center contributes significantly to the preservation and celebration of indigenous cultures.

Activities and Events

Throughout the year, the center organizes various events and activities, including presentations, workshops, and guided tours. These events are designed to educate and engage the public, providing insights into the rich cultural heritage of the region.
