You couldn’t help but notice last night the incredible amount of June bugs gathering around light and being hit by cars. While driving it sounds like it’s hailing. These large bugs come out in late May to June to lay their eggs. They have a life span from 1 to 3 years and lay their eggs in the dirt. They live most of their lives in the dirt similar to cicadas but are out for a longer period in the summer. Cleaning these bugs up can be a mess since they are so large. (fb)

Pictured below is a Northern Flicker. The Northern Flicker is apart of the Woodpecker family Picidae. They are found across North America and have very charismatic colorations. Their call is also very unique and easily identified. They are cavity nesters and are ground foragers. Northern Flickers found in the east have yellow in their wings when they take flight while bird in the west have red.
