In response to the House of Representatives passing by a 215-214-1 vote H.R. 1, a large tax and spending package that includes cuts to earned federal benefits and policies that undermine the merit-based civil service, NARFE National President William “Bill” Shackelford issued the following statement in opposition to the bill: “This bill would claw back part of the value of vested retirement benefits via the elimination of the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) annuity supplement. Worse, the bill may retroactively reduce the retirement benefits of individuals taking a voluntary early retirement offer as part of ongoing reduction-in-force actions."
