Instituto Cimarrón is dedicated to promoting programming, research, and education that center the artistic and cultural works of marginalized communities of color, particularly those whose histories intersect with advocacy and social justice. Named after the Afro-descendants in Latin America and the Caribbean who engaged in marronage—acts of resistance and the formation of free communities—our mission is to harness the transformative power of artistic expression and cultural research to empower communities, celebrate our unique heritages, and foster a society where culture is synonymous with freedom. Guided by our principle, "Our Culture is Our Freedom," we amplify the legacies of Afro-descendants and other marginalized groups to build a more just and equitable future.
