Boston City Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association

The Boston City Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association is a nonprofit organization that preserves the legacy and traditions of the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing. The school itself was established in 1878, 14 years after the founding of Boston City Hospital, under the leadership of Dr. Edward Cowles. Linda Richards, a pioneering nurse and the first graduate of a nurse training program in the United States, played a pivotal role in setting up the curriculum based on Florence Nightingale's principles of nursing[1].

History

The Boston City Hospital School of Nursing began as a training program affiliated with a municipal hospital, emphasizing patient care as its core mission. Initially, the program was a two-year course, with students receiving a modest stipend in exchange for hospital service. Over time, the school evolved, expanding its program to three years by 1908 under the leadership of Lucy Drown, who succeeded Linda Richards[1].

Notable Alumnae

The school boasts a list of accomplished alumni who have made significant contributions to the field of nursing. Notable figures include Mary Riddle, Anna C. Maxwell, Marion G. Parsons, and Frances Slanger, among others. These individuals were not only distinguished in their professional achievements but also served in crucial roles during major conflicts[1].

Legacy and Closure

The school operated until its closure on May 27, 1975. Despite its end, the legacy of the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing continues through its alumni association, which maintains historical records and promotes the values of nursing excellence that defined the institution[1].

Alumni Association Activities

The Alumni Association organizes events to commemorate important milestones in the history of the school. For instance, it celebrated the 145th anniversary of the school's founding with a luncheon in 2023. These events serve to keep the spirit of the school alive and connected to its roots in the Boston community[1].
