Nueces Mosque
Nueces Mosque is a nonprofit organization, registered under EIN # 83-4294610 as a 501(c)(3) entity. It was established by a group of Muslim students at the University of Texas at Austin in 1977 and serves as a significant spiritual and community center in the heart of Texas.
Mission and Activities
Nueces Mosque is dedicated to fostering a strong Muslim community, particularly among students and young professionals. It provides a range of educational and spiritual programs throughout the year, hosting prominent Islamic scholars from around the world. The mosque is known for its emphasis on community development, Islamic education, and interfaith dialogue.
The mosque offers various religious activities, including iftar for over 400 Muslims during Ramadan, Taraweeh prayers, and Qiyam al-Layl during the last ten nights of Ramadan. It also participates in broader community services through the Greater Austin Muslim Relief Committee (GAMRC), which supports financial and humanitarian needs in the Austin area.
Greater Austin Muslim Relief Committee Involvement
As part of the GAMRC, Nueces Mosque assists with providing aid for rent, utilities, food, urgent debts, and medical expenses. It supports domestic violence cases, single mothers, widows, and orphans. The mosque also distributes food baskets during Ramadan and Eid, facilitates donations of essential items, and organizes educational programs for less fortunate students.
Reconstruction Project
Nueces Mosque is currently involved in a reconstruction project aimed at replacing its aging facility with a modern, state-of-the-art building. This new facility will serve as a beacon of Islam in Texas and provide a spiritual sanctuary for students and young professionals. The project includes plans for a Dawah Center and a Seminary, aiming to become a hub for Islamic education and community engagement.
The reconstruction project is designed to be self-sustaining, with student housing providing rental income to cover operational costs. This unique approach integrates spiritual, educational, and residential components to meet the growing needs of the Muslim community near UT Austin.
Governance and Community Engagement
Nueces Mosque operates under the leadership of an Imam, a Student Executive Committee, and a Board of Directors. The mosque encourages participation from both men and women in its community activities and decision-making processes, promoting Islamic values while respecting American cultural norms that align with these values. It engages in civic and interfaith activities to foster understanding and cooperation within the broader community.
Financial Support
The mosque relies on donations to support its ongoing activities, including educational programs, community services, and the reconstruction project. Donations can be considered for tax deductions due to its 501(c)(3) status. The mosque also protects the privacy of its donors, ensuring that their information is not shared without consent.
