“Art is for other people, it’s not just for yourself.” Pacita Abad We’re resharing this powerful post from NMWA in celebration of AANHPI Heritage Month. Pacita Abad was born in 1946 in Basco, Batanes, a remote island in the South China Sea. Through her vividly colored multimedia works, she brought attention to the legacies of Western colonialism and the experiences of political and economic refugees. Abad was raised in a politically active family. Her parents were both members of Congress and involved in the Philippine resistance. She initially planned to follow in their footsteps and study law. A visit to San Francisco changed her path. Immersing herself in the local art scene, she decided to pursue art full time, using it as a new way to advocate for marginalized communities. She is best known for her trapunto technique, where she treated the canvas like a textile by painting, stuffing, stitching, and embellishing it with beads, buttons, and glass. Abad’s “One Night Stand” is on view now in “Remix: The Collection” on the third floor of the museum. 🎨 Artwork credit: Pacita Abad, “One Night Stand,” 2002; © Pacita Abad Art Estate, Courtesy of Pacita Abad Art Estate [Image description: A large, colorful, abstract painting.] #AANHPIHeritageMonth #PacitaAbad #WomenInTheArts #ACNMWA #5WomenArtists #RemixTheCollection #NMWANoW (fb)
