Fire the bosses, free the land, elect ourselves! A network of 200+ organizations building the solidarity economy movement: https://t.co/CesbG48rmz The New Economy Coalition (NEC) convenes a network of 200+ organizations working to build an economy New Economy Coalition is a network of organizations imagining and building a future where people, communities, and ecosystems thrive. We are creating deep change in our economy and politics—placing power in the hands of people and uprooting legacies of harm—so that a fundamentally new system can take root. We advance change in three main ways: 1) Convene and connect leaders to tackle common challenges in their work to build a new economy. 2) Amplify stories, tools, and analysis, weaving a collective new economy narrative that can build shared identity, shift culture and policy, and promote a clear vision of the next system. 3) Lift up the work of communities on the frontlines of interrelated economic and ecological crises who are organizing for transformative change.

New Economy Coalition

The New Economy Coalition (NEC) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization that operates as a membership-based network. Formerly known as the New Economics Institute, it represents the solidarity economy movement in the United States.

History

The New Economy Coalition was formed in response to growing national interest in alternative economic systems following the Great Recession. In 2013, the New Economics Institute merged with the New Economy Network to become the New Economy Coalition. This merger solidified the organization's role in promoting systemic economic alternatives.

Mission and Vision

The NEC supports a just transition from an extractive to a regenerative economy by building the scale and power of the solidarity economy movement, particularly in marginalized communities. It envisions a world where livelihoods are no longer dominated by capitalism or other extractive systems, emphasizing collective agency and self-determination. Central to this vision are regional solidarity economy ecosystems where communities control essential resources such as housing, schools, and healthcare.

Structure and Governance

As a worker-self-directed nonprofit since 2021, the NEC operates without an Executive Director. Decision-making is collective, incorporating sociocratic principles. The leadership involves a General Circle composed of elected staff and member-elected board representatives, ensuring accountability to its membership.

Programs and Activities

Key initiatives include the CommonBound conference series, which convenes solidarity economy organizers and practitioners to share practices and strengthen relationships. The NEC also operates a Movement Support Program to provide financial resources to frontline organizations, and the New Economies Reporting Project to educate journalists on solidarity economy solutions.

Advocacy and Policy

The NEC advocates for left-wing economic policies, including worker-owned cooperatives, community-controlled housing, financial justice, and climate justice. It supports a major overhaul of the financial system, including breaking up large banks and promoting local financial institutions. Additionally, the NEC promotes environmentalist policies such as fossil fuel divestment and local energy co-ops.

Partnerships and Movement

The NEC collaborates with various left-of-center organizations and participates in international solidarity economy networks. It emphasizes community-led economic alternatives, prioritizing democratic governance and environmental sustainability.

Leadership

The NEC's board includes individuals from diverse left-wing and social justice organizations, contributing to its strategic direction and advocacy efforts.

The organization has evolved since its inception to prioritize diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that its leadership and membership reflect the communities it serves.
