Songs & Smiles

Songs & Smiles is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization operating in the United States. Its mission is to support individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, focusing on maintaining family connections throughout the caregiving journey.

Founding and Inspiration

The organization was co-founded by Eric and Sheryl Kolb, motivated by their personal experiences. Sheryl had cared for her mother, Trish, who lived with Alzheimer's, and this experience highlighted the need for support systems that encourage family connections despite the challenges of the disease. The first Songs & Smiles event was held in 2017 as an extension of a birthday celebration for Trish, showcasing the power of music and shared moments in preserving relationships.

Activities and Programs

Songs & Smiles engages in various activities designed to foster joy and connectivity for families affected by dementia:

• Singalong Events: The organization hosts community singalongs, which are interactive music sessions aimed at helping people with dementia connect with their memories and emotions. These events promote family bonding and are conducted in multiple locations across the U.S.

• Joyful Memories Magazine: Songs & Smiles publishes a dementia-friendly magazine titled Joyful Memories, designed to be accessible and enjoyable for individuals with dementia. The magazine features fun, engaging content without ads or complex information.

• Volunteer Leadership Program: The organization trains and supports volunteer leaders to facilitate singalong events, expanding its reach and supporting more families.
