Pup Development - Transitional Period - 14-24 Days This oldie but goodie photo (several years ago) from the Tallahassee Zoo shows red wolf pups approaching 2 weeks of age. They are snuggled together with eyes open but with minimally developed sight. They can perceive movement but not forms. Their eyes do not yet have pigment, so they appear blue at this very early stage of development. As they approach three weeks, the pups begin to stand and walk around. Milk incisors emerge, and the rascals will soon be lapping up small pieces of regurgitated meat brought by the adults. Vocalizations include growls and the first high-pitched attempts at howling. (fb)
