THE MISSION OF SAFE WATER INTERNATIONAL (SWI): To identify clean drinking water solutions for the poorest rural areas of the world and to promote local marketplace involvement in delivering those solutions. Safe Water International’s Program. Safe Water International believes a marketplace strategy directed at the family household can attack waterborne diseases in communities that will not see community water systems for many years to come. Observations and study of economic behavior in poor rural areas show that the rural poor find the means to purchase drinking water solutions when competing costs of time, labor, and disability make purchases rational. Once local consumer demand is present, entrepreneurs can be mobilized to supply demonstrated water purification systems or products that have found local acceptance.SAFE WATER INTERNATIONAL OBJECTIVESo To identify and promote drinking water purification products and systems that are effective, economical, and have acceptance in poor rural areas.o To investigate the prospect of marketplace distribution of candidate systems and products in rural remote communities of developing countries.o To promote local manufacture and distribution of successfully demonstrated drinking water solutions through distribution of technical information and through licensing and other commercial agreements. PROGRAM STRATEGYTECHNOLOGY SURVEY AND ASSESSMENT Safe Water International works to identify the widest possible group of relevant drinking water purification products and technologies through its ongoing survey of household water treatment systems and devices. This survey of small water purification systems is available on the SWI Internet web page at: www.safewaterintl.org.TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM Safe Water International is working to sponsor or collaborate on local demonstrations in Mexico, Cambodia, Malawi and Guatemala. These activities seek to test the effectiveness of low-cost water purification systems, determine their local appeal, and promote local manufacture where feasible. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER Safe Water International seeks to help create an Internet Clearing House as a central information bank for those in the field who need useful and accurate information to make on the spot decisions regarding appropriate and effective water and sanitation solutions.
