We knew this was not going to be easy, moving in people off the streets, shelters, and cars into our safe tiny-homes. We know that most research shows that about 30-40% of people living without a home have substance abuse issues with drugs and/or alchohol. Reality is that out of the 25 new neighbors we have at Eden Village, 5 are currently in rehab, as we have discovered illegal drugs in their possession, which is a violation of our community rules here. They made this choice because when we discover evidance of illegal drugs, we give them a choice....either fight to fix their problem with some type of rehab or 12-step program, with drug tests to prove they are clean, or we have to ask them to leave (with over 600 current applications with people wanting a home). With our 5 getting a taste of what living in a safe, dignified community can be, they made to choice to go to rehab. I can guarantee you that IF they were still on the streets, that decision would not have been made. So, we celebrate their decisions and look forward to being their support when they return (we keep their home for them rent-free while they are gone) while making them accountable for their new life. Addiction is a brutal, dark, and sometimes deadly beast. I hate what it does to people and families. We aim to help our residents fight it with all their might.
