Farm Safety 4 Just Kids
Overview
Farm Safety 4 Just Kids was a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting farm safety for children. Founded by Marilyn Adams in 1987, the organization was established in response to the tragic death of Adams' 11-year-old son, Keith, in a farm accident involving a gravity flow wagon of corn.
Mission and Activities
The mission of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids was to educate children and their families about farm safety through various initiatives. The organization developed educational materials, including activity books, videos, and other resources, focusing on topics such as machinery safety, livestock safety, chemical safety, and rural roadway issues. They also established a network of grassroots volunteers across the United States and Canada to conduct educational programs aimed at preventing accidents and fatalities among children in rural environments.
History
The organization was formed after Marilyn Adams' son suffered a fatal accident in 1986. Over its nearly three decades of operation, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids successfully reduced farm-related fatalities among children by providing critical safety education. The organization operated with a significant chapter network and had a budget nearing one million dollars at its peak, supported by various corporate sponsors.
Impact and Legacy
During its operational period, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids observed a significant decline in farm-related child fatalities. The organization's efforts contributed to raising awareness about farm safety nationwide. In recognition of her contributions, Marilyn Adams received the Volvo for Life Grand Award in 2008.
Dissolution
In 2016, the board of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids decided to dissolve the organization. Its assets, including educational materials and intellectual property, were transferred to the Progressive Agriculture Foundation to continue advancing the mission of promoting youth safety in agriculture. The organization also donated funds to the National 4-H Council and the National FFA Organization in support of their youth safety advocacy work.
