Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity
Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable housing to low-income families in Jefferson and Lewis Counties, New York. The organization was established in the early 1990s and officially became a Habitat for Humanity affiliate in November 1994.
History
The Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity began its operations with the formation of a steering committee in the summer of 1993. By 1994, it had gained official status as a Habitat affiliate. In May 1996, the organization held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first house at 1177 Superior Street, Watertown, NY. The first house was dedicated in 1997, marking a significant milestone in the organization's mission to provide decent housing.
Over the years, the affiliate has continued to expand its efforts, completing projects in both Jefferson and Lewis counties. Notable achievements include the rehabilitation of a house on Mundy Street and the acquisition of the first building site in Lowville, NY, in 1998. The house in Depauville, NY, which was donated by Key Bank, was completed in 1999.
Activities and Initiatives
Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity engages in various activities to achieve its goal of eliminating substandard housing. These include building new homes and rehabilitating existing ones through volunteer labor and cost-effective construction methods. The organization relies on community support, donations, and fundraising efforts to sustain its projects.
In 2018, the affiliate collaborated with Neighbors of Watertown to rehabilitate a home as part of the ESPRI program, furthering its commitment to affordable housing. The organization also operates a ReStore, which sells donated building materials and household items to support its building initiatives.
Financial Model
Habitat for Humanity operates on a financial model that includes no-interest or low-interest mortgages for homeowners, ensuring that housing remains affordable. The mortgages are repaid by homeowners and used to fund future projects, creating a revolving fund that supports the organization's long-term mission.
Partnership with Homeowners
To qualify for a Habitat home, families must demonstrate a need for affordable housing, the ability to repay a mortgage, and a willingness to contribute "sweat equity" by working alongside volunteers during the construction process. This partnership model empowers homeowners to invest in their own future while also contributing to the broader community.
Impact
Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity has made significant contributions to the local community, providing stable housing opportunities for many families over the years. Through its dedication to affordable housing and community engagement, the organization continues to work toward its vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
