The St. John Community Development Corporation is a nonprofit organization founded in 1998 as an extension of the benevolence ministry of the St. John AME Zion Church. It is a state-chartered 501(c)(3) organization.

Mission

The mission of the St. John Community Development Corporation is to foster economic development and improve social services. The organization focuses on two primary goals:

  1. Providing Social and Educational Services: These services aim to create positive change in individuals and families by offering resources that support personal and community development.
  2. Creating Economic Development Opportunities: The corporation facilitates economic growth through real estate and workforce development initiatives.
Programs and Services

St. John Community Development Corporation offers several programs designed to support the community:

  • Transitional Housing: The St. John House for Men provides shelter to individuals in need and supports them in securing employment and developing financial plans for independent living.
  • Save a Youth (S.A.Y.) Program: Established in 2005, the S.A.Y. program includes an afterschool program and a summer camp for youth in grades K-5. The program focuses on academic achievement, character development, life skills, and vocational skills building. It also incorporates a gang prevention component.
    • Vocational Program: This program targets youth aged 14-17 who are at risk of gang involvement or academic failure. It provides vocational skills training, apprenticeships, and social and life skills development.
    • 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) Program: This program provides academic enrichment opportunities during after-school hours and summer camps, focusing on subjects like math and reading.
Impact

The St. John Community Development Corporation has made significant contributions to the community by empowering individuals and families through its social services and economic development initiatives.
