Leg Up for Clevelands Kids
LUCK addresses multiple challenges facing Cleveland’s vulnerable youth. A shortage of extracurricular and career-readiness activities, coupled with strained relations between community members and authority figures, negatively impacts young people’s abilities to create viable and sustaining relationships and futures. Riding and caring for horses provides participants valuable job-training and social-emotional skills. Occasional interaction with Cleveland Mounted Police provides opportunity for students and officers to experience one another in a calm, impartial setting. The program offers unprecedented collaboration and community engagement, while immersion in the equestrian industry allows mitigation of community trauma and social capital for able-bodied youth.
