The Mockingbird Society
The Mockingbird Society is a U.S. nonprofit advocacy organization based in Seattle, Washington. It was founded in 2000 by Jim Theofelis with the goal of providing meaningful opportunities for youths across Washington state to participate in efforts to improve the foster care system.
Vision and Mission
The organization's vision is for every young person to reach adulthood with equitable opportunities to thrive, regardless of their racial background or individual experiences. Its mission is to transform the foster care system and end youth homelessness by creating, supporting, and advocating for racially equitable and healthy environments for young people at risk of or experiencing foster care or homelessness.
History and Expansion
Initially, The Mockingbird Society launched The Mockingbird Times, a monthly newspaper written by young people who have experienced foster care, aimed at positively impacting public perceptions of young people in foster care or homeless situations. Over time, the organization expanded its work to collaborate with foster families and child-placing agencies to improve outcomes for both youth and caregivers. Recognizing the link between foster care experiences and homelessness, it began addressing youth homelessness issues in 2013.
Public Policy and Advocacy
The Mockingbird Society's Public Policy and Advocacy team works closely with youth, young adults, and affected families to advocate for system reforms. They develop annual policy agendas to reform child welfare and homelessness systems through policy changes, practice improvements, and budget allocations. The organization primarily advocates at the state level but also influences federal and local policies. Mockingbird youth advocates are involved in key state committees and work directly with elected officials to drive youth-led policy changes.
Legislative Impact
The organization has achieved significant legislative wins, marking its 70th major legislative victory since its inception. Recent examples include supporting the creation of community-based housing programs for young people transitioning into long-term housing.
Demographics and Focus
The Mockingbird Society focuses on supporting diverse demographics, including low-income, LGBTQ+, Black & African American, Hispanic & Latinx, Indigenous & Native American, Asian & Pacific Islander, and individuals with disabilities.
Charity Rating
The organization has earned a 4/4-star rating on Charity Navigator, highlighting its effective governance and financial management practices.
