Ducks Unlimited was formally incorporated on January 29, 1937. Its early beginnings were shaped by discussions among its founders at a fishing camp on the Beaverkill River in New York. The name "Ducks Unlimited" was coined from a conversation between Joseph Palmer Knapp and Arthur M. Bartley, reflecting the organization's ambitious goal of conserving an unlimited number of ducks.

Over the years, Ducks Unlimited has evolved into the world's largest and most effective private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization.
