Little League Baseball Inc
Overview
Little League Baseball Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It is renowned as the largest organized youth sports organization in the world, focusing on promoting baseball and softball among children aged 4 to 16. Founded by Carl Edwin Stotz in 1939, the organization emphasizes developing character, courage, and loyalty through sports.
History
Carl Stotz began organizing a baseball league for preteens in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 1938. He experimented with field sizes and equipment, eventually establishing the first formal league with three teams sponsored by local businesses: Jumbo Pretzel, Lycoming Dairy, and Lundy Lumber Company. The first official game took place on June 6, 1939. Over the years, Little League expanded rapidly, forming its first league outside Pennsylvania in New Jersey in 1947 and initiating the National Little League Tournament, now known as the Little League World Series.
By the early 1950s, Little League had expanded beyond U.S. borders. The first permanent international league was established in British Columbia, Canada, in 1951, marking the beginning of its global presence. By 1999, Little League had grown to include programs in over 100 countries.
Structure
Little League operates on four main levels: Local, District, Regional, and International.
-
Local Level: Each local league is autonomous, operating within defined geographical boundaries. Leagues are run by volunteer boards that manage daily operations, provide coaching, and ensure that every child plays in every game.
-
District Level: Districts comprise 10 to 20 local leagues and are overseen by a District Administrator. They organize district tournaments and serve as a liaison between local leagues and regional directors.
-
Regional Level: The U.S. is divided into five regions, with additional international regions in Canada, Puerto Rico, South Korea, and Poland. Each region supports local leagues and coordinates tournaments.
-
International Level: Little League Baseball Incorporated, based in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, maintains the international program. It oversees all operations and ensures adherence to rules and policies.
Programs
Little League offers various programs:
-
Baseball and Softball Divisions: Available for children aged 4 to 16, these include Tee Ball for younger players, Minor Leagues for newer players, Little Leagues for ages 9-12, Junior Leagues for ages 13-14, Senior Leagues for ages 14-16, and Big Leagues for ages 16-18.
-
Softball Programs: Similar divisions exist for girls' softball, introduced in 1974.
-
Challenger Division: Provides opportunities for children with physical and mental disabilities to participate in baseball and softball.
Mission
The mission of Little League Baseball Inc. is to develop superior citizens rather than superior athletes. It emphasizes life lessons beyond sports, such as discipline, teamwork, courage, loyalty, and good character. With millions of players worldwide, Little League continues to be a significant force in youth development through sports.

-
Federal Charter: In 1964, Little League received a federal charter from the U.S. Congress, recognizing its national significance.
