🧵 Now on view: “Island Scroll” by Alisa Banks This deeply personal, hand-embroidered scroll maps the farmland where artist Alisa Banks’ mother and aunt grew up—an area they called “the Island.” Using their memories and voices as her guide, Banks first sketched the terrain on brown paper, later transferring it to vintage linen. The work includes names of local plants and animals alongside fragments of family conversations and interviews. Still in progress, the piece is an intimate act of storytelling, stitching together land, memory, and lineage. “Island Scroll” is part of Alisa Banks: Unerased, an exhibition exploring Black identity, ancestral knowledge, and cultural memory. Banks uses fiber, books, and multimedia to delve into themes of home, heritage, and the African diaspora—especially for those disconnected from traditional narratives and Western literacy. Her use of materials like hair, plants, and textiles honors forms of knowledge often overlooked, offering new ways of seeing and remembering. 📍 On view through Sept. 6, 2025 in the Holaday and Seagraves Galleries at the Fine Arts Center. 🔗 Learn more: https://fac.coloradocollege.edu/exhibits/unerased/ (fb)
