Cooley performed the first successful heart transplantation in the U.S. and the world's first artificial heart implantation at the hospital in 1968 and 1969, respectively. In 2013, the hospital was acquired by Catholic Health Initiatives, and in 2014, Baylor College of Medicine entered into a joint ownership agreement, leading to its current name as Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.
