Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc.
Overview
Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth football, cheer, and dance programs to children aged 5 to 16 across the United States and several international locations. The organization emphasizes the importance of academic achievement alongside athletic participation.
History
Pop Warner Little Scholars traces its origins back to 1929 when Joseph J. Tomlin established the Junior Football Conference in Northeast Philadelphia. This was initially a response to vandalism concerns by local factory owners, who funded Tomlin's initiative to engage youth in sports. The organization grew and was later renamed in honor of legendary coach Glenn Scobie "Pop" Warner after his involvement in the early 1930s. The organization was officially incorporated as a national nonprofit in 1959.
Programs
PWLS offers various programs:
- Football: The organization features both tackle and flag football divisions. Tackle football teams are divided into age and weight categories, while flag football serves as a developmental and safety-focused alternative.
- Cheer and Dance: Introduced in the 1970s, these programs include traditional cheerleading, majorettes, pom squads, and pep squads. They are designed to provide athletic and performance opportunities while emphasizing sportsmanship and teamwork.
Participation and Safety
Pop Warner serves over 400,000 participants annually and operates within strict safety guidelines. Concerns over brain health and concussions have led to significant rule changes, including the elimination of kickoffs in younger age groups and restrictions on certain stances.
Academic Emphasis
A key aspect of PWLS is its focus on academic achievement. Participants are required to maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, with exceptions allowed at the discretion of school administrators for students who would benefit from the program. The organization honors outstanding scholars through its All-American Scholar Program.
National Competitions
Pop Warner hosts national football and cheer competitions annually at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida. These events bring together top teams and individuals to celebrate athletic and academic achievements.
Legacy and Impact
Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. is recognized for its comprehensive approach to youth development, combining sports participation with academic rigor and personal development, serving as a model for organized youth sports.
