Historically, both male and female African elephants have tusks and primarily, male Asian elephants are the ones with tusks. Field studies are now discovering that more male Asian elephants have no tusks. They are referred to as "makhnas". These males must rely on their trunk strength and body weight for foraging and protection. More research will need to be done to explain if the male tuskless trend is relating to ivory poaching.
