UnidosUS
Overview
UnidosUS, formerly known as the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), is the largest Latino nonprofit advocacy organization in the United States. Founded in 1968, it focuses on promoting progressive public policy changes, particularly in areas such as immigration reform, civil rights, education, health, and housing. The organization operates through a network of nearly 300 community-based affiliates across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
History
UnidosUS originated from the Southwest Council of La Raza, which was established in 1968 in Phoenix, Arizona, with support from the Ford Foundation. By 1973, the organization expanded nationally and became the National Council of La Raza, relocating its headquarters to Washington, D.C. Initially focused on Mexican American issues, NCLR began addressing broader Latino concerns by the late 1970s. The organization underwent a significant transformation when it changed its name to UnidosUS in 2017.
Programs and Activities
UnidosUS engages in various programs and initiatives aimed at addressing social, economic, and political barriers affecting the Latino community. Key areas of focus include:
- Civic Engagement: Efforts to increase Latino voter registration and participation in the political process.
- Civil Rights and Immigration: Advocating for policies that support immigrant rights and a path to citizenship.
- Education: Supporting educational opportunities and resources for Latino students and families.
- Health and Housing: Addressing disparities in healthcare and housing access for the Latino community.
The organization also operates the Raza Development Fund, the largest Hispanic community development financial institution in the country, which has invested over $2 billion in communities.
Funding and Operations
UnidosUS relies on a mix of funding sources, including donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government grants. In recent years, the organization has emphasized private funding, reducing its reliance on government support. A significant fundraising campaign was conducted to raise $50 million, completed six months ahead of schedule, marking a milestone in the organization's development efforts.
Impact
UnidosUS has had a profound impact on the Latino community. Key achievements include helping over 1.4 million immigrants gain citizenship, assisting 90,000 individuals in avoiding foreclosure through its Homeownership Network, and ensuring that over 2 million home care workers gained minimum wage and overtime protections.
Leadership
Janet Murguía has been the President and CEO of UnidosUS since 2005. Under her leadership, the organization has continued to expand its advocacy efforts and strengthen its community programs.
Conclusion
UnidosUS plays a critical role in advocating for the rights and interests of the Latino community in the United States. Through its diverse programs and strategic leadership, the organization continues to address and challenge the socio-economic and political barriers faced by Latinos across the country.
