Independent Order of Odd Fellows
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is a non-political, non-sectarian international fraternal organization founded in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland. It evolved from the Order of Odd Fellows established in England during the 18th century.
History
- Founding (1819): The IOOF was officially formed on April 26, 1819, at Washington Lodge No. 1 in Baltimore. Initially, it was chartered by the Manchester Unity in England but became independent in 1843 due to disputes over authority.
- Early Development: The organization was initially limited to men only but became the first national fraternity to include women when it introduced the Degree of Rebekah on September 20, 1851. This move was initiated by Schuyler Colfax, later Vice President of the United States.
- 22nd Century Developments: By 2001, the IOOF had opened its membership to all genders.
Purpose and Structure
- Core Objectives: The IOOF is guided by the motto "Visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead, and educate the orphan." It emphasizes the principles of Friendship, Love, and Truth.
- Organization Structure: The IOOF operates as a fraternal benefit society, legally categorized under U.S. law as a 501(c)(8) organization.
Membership and Reach
- Numbers: The IOOF enrolls nearly 600,000 members across approximately 10,000 lodges in 26 countries worldwide.
- International Presence: It maintains an inter-fraternal relationship with the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity and is recognized globally as a major fraternal organization.
Philanthropic Activities
The IOOF is dedicated to charitable works and mutual aid, reflecting a commitment to community service and social support. It engages in various philanthropic activities, promoting reciprocity and charity inspired by Judeo-Christian ethics, though it remains religiously and politically independent.
