Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina
Overview
The Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina, commonly referenced as the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina, is one of the oldest and largest fraternal organizations in North Carolina. It has been continuously active since its establishment on December 12, 1787. The founding occurred through a convention of Masonic lodges in Tarboro, North Carolina.
History
Prior to its formal establishment, Masonic lodges had been active in North Carolina since at least 1755. Initially, these lodges operated under the authority of other grand lodges, including the Premier Grand Lodge of England. In 1771, the Duke of Beaufort chartered the Provincial Grand Lodge of North Carolina, which functioned until Joseph Montfort's death in 1776. Between Montfort's death and the end of the American Revolution, the Provincial Grand Lodge effectively ceased to function, although individual lodges continued to meet.
In 1787, delegates from several lodges convened to create the Grand Lodge of North Carolina, electing Samuel Johnston as its first Grand Master. Johnston was a prominent figure in North Carolina, serving as a governor of the state. Other early Grand Masters included Richard Caswell and William R. Davie.
Structure and Activities
The organization is composed of more than 300 active lodges across North Carolina's 100 counties. It is recognized for its extensive contributions to community service, educational support, and disaster relief efforts. The Grand Lodge maintains a library with over 4,000 Masonic volumes and operates a museum with exhibits featuring Masonic artifacts and history.

Philosophical Foundations
The organization is based on three core principles: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth. These principles guide Masonic teachings and practices, emphasizing the importance of fraternal bonds, charitable works, and moral integrity.

This cooperation allows for visitation and cultural exchange between members of both Masonic traditions.
