Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDAC)
Introduction
The Electronic System Design Alliance, formerly known as the Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDAC), is a nonprofit organization focused on issues affecting the electronic design automation (EDA) industry. Although it is now known as the Electronic System Design Alliance, its historical roots and contributions to the field are deeply connected to the name EDAC. The organization was established in 1987 and incorporated in 1992.
Mission and Activities
EDAC, as part of its mission, served as a central voice to communicate and promote the value of the semiconductor design industry. It addressed technical, marketing, economic, and legislative issues affecting the industry. The organization hosted and sponsored various industry events, including the Design Automation Conference (DAC) and the Design And Test in Europe (DATE) conference, to foster collaboration and innovation among its members.
Recognition and Contributions
In 1994, EDAC instituted the Phil Kaufman Award to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to electronic design automation. The organization also published the Market Statistics Service (MSS) report, which later evolved into the Electronic Design Market Data (EDMD) report, providing crucial industry insights.
Evolution and Integration
In response to industry shifts, EDAC expanded its focus beyond integrated circuit design to encompass the broader realm of electronic systems design. This strategic evolution led to a name change in 2016, rebranding as the Electronic System Design Alliance (ESD Alliance). In 2018, the ESD Alliance became a part of SEMI (the global electronics industry association) as a SEMI Technology Community.
Impact and Legacy
Through its committees and initiatives, the Electronic System Design Alliance continues to drive industry-wide solutions and foster collaboration among its member companies, business leaders, and government agencies. The organization's legacy as EDAC laid the groundwork for its current role as a leading voice in the semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem.
