This is the story of two men. One was a wanderer...a troubled man walking aimlessly down a rural Marshall County road in search of nothing he had ever known unless it was the whiskey bottle which he already had known all too well for far too long. One was a godsend...a kind-hearted man of faith driving home down that same rural Marshall County road on which he stopped to see if he could help the troubled wanderer. It wasn't immediately clear if he could help much, or how. The wanderer seemed unsure of exactly where he had started his journey and even less sure of exactly how he had arrived here. All he knew was that he had presumptuously left a rehab facility a county or two over and that he now had no money, no plan, and almost no hope. This, of course, didn't stop the kind-hearted man from doing all he could to help. He picked him up. He talked. He listened. He cared. He drove him somewhere to get him something to eat. He bought him a phone charger. He gave him a little money. And he called us to try to find even more help for this weary wanderer who needed all the help he could find. We did what we could—we talked to this troubled man, prayed for him, put him up in a local hotel, and offered to find him a new rehab facility—but it may not have helped much. The man roamed away from the hotel soon after we and the kind-hearted man left; hotel staff weren't sure if he ever even returned. Where did he go? Most likely he took the money his new friend had given him and walked somewhere to buy some whiskey. God knows. Where is he now? Most likely he's back on the road, wearing out his old shoes and his blistered feet, in search of a little more of what he knows on a larger quest to find what he has never known. God knows. What we know is the kind-hearted man is happy he helped the troubled man regardless of the way it seems to have turned out. After all, doing good is never bad and doing right is never wrong. And besides, this story of two men is not yet complete. Maybe...just maybe...the kindness the wanderer received by the hand of the godsend planted the seeds of hope and love that the wanderer is so desperately searching for. And maybe...just maybe...those seeds will germinate and grow a miracle. God knows. And sometimes...as in this case...that is enough. THIS. IS. HOPETOWN. (fb)
