Power of Music

Follow Message Edit

The organization was formed to enhance the lives of people who are isolated or detached from the broader community e.g., people seeking shelter, food or medical care and people in transitional or senior living by connecting with them and bringing them the joy of live, in-person music performed by high school students. The Power of Music provides a medium for students to plan, organize, arrange, rehearse, and travel to present music to people in our community who are underserved, specifically including nonprofits with clients in group settings, and connect with them through music, which has a uniquely powerful ability to unite people, increase happiness and positively impact physical and mental health.

Power of Music
Introduction

The Power of Music is a U.S. nonprofit organization that aims to enrich the lives of isolated and in-need community members by providing them with the joy and connectivity of music, particularly through live, in-person performances by high school students.

Origins and Mission

Founded by Joseph Francisco Kayne during his 9th-grade year, the organization is driven by the belief that "where words fail, music speaks." Kayne was inspired by his grandmother, a professional singer and musician, who taught him the power of music to bring joy. The mission is to provide music as a form of positive outreach to those in shelters, receiving medical care, living in senior residences, or in transitional living situations.

Activities and Impact

The organization initially gained momentum with participation from students at Indian Hill High School, who shared Kayne's vision of using music to support their community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when in-person performances were limited, the organization produced video recordings that reached people in transitional homes, families at the Ronald McDonald House, and mental health clinics. In-person performances have included events for nonprofits like Dress for Success, Inter Parish Ministries, Easterseals, and St. Francis Seraph Ministries.

Goals and Philosophy

The Power of Music focuses on addressing social isolation, which affects millions, especially older adults, increasing the risk of dementia, heart disease, and stroke. By leveraging music's proven benefits, including increased happiness, reduced blood pressure and anxiety, and improved psychological well-being, the organization aims to make a positive impact on both mental and physical health.

Status

The Power of Music has evolved into a fully operational nonprofit organization, working directly with schools and community groups to ensure that music reaches those who need it most. The organization is committed to spreading joy and connectivity through music, underscoring the importance of human interaction in combating loneliness.
