The history of Memorial Day. Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn U.S. federal holiday dedicated to honoring military personnel who lost their lives while serving the country. Originally known as "Decoration Day," the tradition began in the 1860s following the Civil War. Unlike Veterans Day, which celebrates all U.S. military veterans, Memorial Day specifically commemorates the fallen. The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide day of remembrance, during which Americans would decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. This date was chosen because it was not the anniversary of a specific battle, allowing all Americans to honor the fallen equally. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress and was set to be observed on the last Monday in May, creating a three-day weekend for federal employees.
