Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc., (ΘΝΞ) is a U.S. nonprofit organization and historically multicultural sorority founded on April 11, 1997, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The sorority was incorporated on April 29, 1999.

Founding and Motivation

The sorority was established by seven diverse women, known as the Founding Monarchs: Geeta Nadia Kapur, Natalie Nicole Barker, Peggy Virginia Long, Melissa Jo Murchison-Blake, Brenda Imade Eribo, Katherine Ellen Stanley, and Janelle Kalia Poe. The vision behind Theta Nu Xi was to create an inclusive sisterhood that could transcend traditional cultural boundaries in the Greek community.

Pillars and Mission

Theta Nu Xi is guided by the pillars of scholarship, service, sisterhood, leadership, and multiculturalism. Its mission is to foster an environment where women of diverse backgrounds can unite to promote these ideals.

Expansion and Growth

In the early years following its founding, Theta Nu Xi expanded to other universities in North Carolina, including North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. By 2000, the sorority had extended beyond North Carolina, establishing its first out-of-state chapter at Utah State University. Today, Theta Nu Xi has over sixty chapters across the United States, offering membership to both undergraduate and post-collegiate women.

Unique Features and Recognition

Theta Nu Xi is notable for being the first multicultural sorority in the Southeastern United States. It is also recognized as the first multicultural sorority to offer membership to post-collegiate women through its Graduate, Alumnae, and Professional (GAP) chapters.

Philanthropy and Community Impact

The sorority supports various philanthropic causes and partners with the organization Girl Up, a global leadership development initiative for girls. Theta Nu Xi chapters annually grant thousands of dollars in scholarships and provide thousands of hours of community service.

Status and Affiliations

Theta Nu Xi is an active member of the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC), which aligns with its mission of promoting multiculturalism and social justice.

Notable Symbols and Motto

The sorority's motto is "Sisters of Diversity, Together as ONE". Its colors are black, lavender, and Carolina blue, and its symbol is the tiger swallowtail butterfly. The sterling silver rose is its flower, and the tiger swallowtail serves as its mascot.
