“I didn’t know anyone who was going to be there that day,” remembers Ellen Staab, of her first Senior Social breakfast at Second Harvest. 2024 was just getting started, and even Ellen’s short walk to the store felt like a new beginning. The past few years, she’d been challenged by surgeries and long hospital stays, a cancer diagnosis, and an autoimmune disorder that left her isolated during the COVID-19 pandemic. When she saw the Senior Social flyer on the bulletin board at #Sharpsburg Towers, Ellen felt like it was an opportunity. “It was one of the first times I was able to get outside and enjoy myself,” she says. In January 2024, Second Harvest launched a weekly #SeniorSocial with the goal of providing a space for our silver neighbors to enjoy a nutritious breakfast and each other’s company. Now, more than a year later, the folks who gathered as strangers at those first few breakfasts are a close-knit crew. “It’s belonging,” says Ellen. “I’ve known some of the people who work [at Second Harvest] since before they worked there.
