Throwing it back—70 million years, to be exact! 🐢 The Fly River turtle (aka the pig-nosed turtle 🐽) is the only surviving member of the family Carettochelyidae and has been around since before the dinosaurs became extinct. Its snorkel-like snout is perfect for sniffing out snacks and detecting scents underwater. Native to the rivers, lakes, swamps, and pools of northern Australia and southern New Guinea, the Fly River turtle is facing serious threats and is considered endangered. Habitat loss, pollution, the pet trade, and overharvesting are the main issues causing this ancient icon’s numbers to plummet. In fact, populations in New Guinea have declined nearly 60 percent in the last 30 years.
