🎉🐢Happy turtle day everyone! To shell-ebrate, I wanted to introduce one of our non-releasable box turtles, Betty! Betty is an older eastern box turtle. This species of special concern can live to be over 100 years old! While we can’t know exactly, Betty is likely over 50 at the very least. Betty was living her best life in the wild. Box turtles have had an estimated decline of around 75% of their population in the last few decades but Betty was doing well and helping to make more wild box turtles to combat the loss. Unfortunately, she was illegally taken from her home and put into a small tank. The person who took her had other cats in the house and was neglectful, only popping by every 3-4 weeks to dump a large bag of cat food on one end of the room and a bag of litter in the other, before leaving for several more weeks. Betty lived upstairs in a 20 gallon tank without consistent food or clean water for two years. Thankfully, someone came to rescue the cats, and they found Betty in the process! They contacted us and Betty has been living with us ever since. Betty is non-releasable because we don’t know where she came from and she’s spent a long period in captivity before coming here. Box turtles have high site fidelity, meaning they perish when relocated, even if they’re moved into perfect box turtle habitat. As such, Betty hangs around here to live out the rest of her turtle life! Agnes enjoys sitting on my lap with her head on my chest for a nap. It's probably a good thing she makes me sit down sometimes. It would probably be better if she threw my phone out of reach too so I can stop retyping the same message 15x about not feeding orphaned wildlife until it sounds not *entirely* unhinged. But hey, in good news all the 3 cat and dog caught chipmunks plus the weird middle of the road tilty chipmunk are still alive. I think 2 of the 3 might have injuries that will ultimately require euthanasia since they aren't healing as well as expected but I'm not sorry we are still giving them a shot.
