Ducks Unlimited, Inc.

Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of wetlands and associated upland habitats, primarily for waterfowl, but also benefiting other wildlife and people in North America.

History

Ducks Unlimited was founded in 1937 during the Dust Bowl, a period marked by severe drought and low waterfowl populations. Joseph P. Knapp, along with other conservationists, played a pivotal role in its establishment. The organization was incorporated on January 29, 1937, and its Canadian counterpart was established in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on March 10 of the same year.

Mission and Focus

The mission of Ducks Unlimited is to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats. DU focuses on the Prairie Pothole Region and other critical waterfowl habitats across North America. The organization's vision is to ensure there are enough wetlands to support waterfowl populations indefinitely.

Operational Approach

Ducks Unlimited operates through a grassroots, volunteer-based structure with over 40,000 volunteers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It organizes more than 4,000 fundraising events annually, leveraging these funds to support high-priority conservation projects and secure additional funding from other sources.
