The organization's primary mission is to prevent unwanted, neglected, and abused dogs and cats by offering affordable spay/neuter surgeries and preventive care. Additionally, they provide guidance on responsible pet ownership, promoting the fostering and adoption of companion animals to find them loving, forever homes.

History

The Hill Country Animal League was established on January 31, 1986, initially as a co-op adoption program in collaboration with the local Bexar County Humane Society. It was founded by four women who merged their passion for community fundraising, such as neighborhood garage and rummage sales, with their concern for the growing number of unwanted pets. Over the years, the organization has grown to include a thrift store, established in 2001, which serves as a primary funding source. The Hill Country Animal League Spay and Neuter Clinic was opened in Boerne, Texas, in 2006.

The organization's key services include:

  • Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Surgeries: With over 100,000 surgeries performed since its inception.
  • Pet Wellness Services: Offering various preventive care options.
  • Adoption and Fostering: Supporting the placement of companion animals into loving homes.

Funding

Hill Country Animal League relies heavily on donations and funds generated from its thrift store operations. In recent years, the organization's revenue and expenses have been closely matched, with significant portions attributed to program services and contributions. The thrift store remains a crucial element in sustaining the clinic's operations.

Hill Country Animal League is governed by a board of directors committed to ethical practices, transparency, and diversity in leadership. The organization follows structured governance policies, including formal orientations for new board members and regular reviews of conflict-of-interest policies.

Impact and Goals
