The name "Sahaya" means "help" in Sanskrit, reflecting the organization's mission to provide support and assistance to those in need. Founded by Dr. Koen Van Rompay after a pivotal trip to India, Sahaya International received its official non-profit status in November 1999.

The mission of Sahaya International is to build awareness and provide support for healthcare, education, environmental, and socio-economic programs in developing countries. It aims to contribute to a world where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and live in peace with others and with nature. Key objectives include:
