Free & Accepted Masons of California

The Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of California, often referred to as the Grand Lodge of California, is a Masonic organization in California, USA. It was established in 1850, the same year California became a state, and it holds a significant place in the history and development of the region.

History

During the Gold Rush of 1849, many Freemasons came to California, bringing with them Masonic traditions and values. They established some of the first Masonic lodges in the mining towns of the Gold Country. Within a decade, the number of lodges grew from 11 to 130, and membership increased from 258 to over 5,000[2][5].

Role in California History

Masons have played a pivotal role in shaping California's history. Notable figures such as Robert Semple, president of the first state constitutional convention, and Serranus Clinton Hastings, the first chief justice of California, were Freemasons. Specifically, nine of the 48 members of the first state constitutional convention were Masons[1]. Additionally, 19 California governors and at least four U.S. Senators from California have been Masons[2][5].

Philanthropic Efforts

The Grand Lodge of California is known for its extensive philanthropic activities. Early charitable endeavors included assisting victims of the cholera outbreak in Sacramento in 1850, where California Masons raised significant funds to build and maintain a hospital[5]. Today, Masonic members volunteer hundreds of thousands of hours and donate millions of dollars to support various community initiatives, including education and healthcare.

Auxiliary Organizations

The Masonic fraternity in California also supports several youth organizations, such as the Order of DeMolay for boys and Job’s Daughters and Rainbow Girls for girls. Additionally, the Shriners have a presence in California, with charitable hospitals established in San Francisco and Southern California[1].

Diversity and Expansion

The Grand Lodge of California emphasizes diversity and innovation, representing men of various backgrounds, races, and beliefs. It has expanded by establishing new lodges, particularly in underserved areas since 2015, and utilizes technology to enhance community engagement and online educational resources for members[4].

Prince Hall Masonry

Separately, Prince Hall Masonry in California has its own distinct history. Founded in the 1850s, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of California developed from the earliest African American Masonic lodges in the state. Despite initial challenges, including territorial disputes, the organization grew significantly post-World War II[3].
