Watts Bar Lake Association
The Watts Bar Lake Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the community surrounding Watts Bar Lake in eastern Tennessee. Established in 1998, its mission is multifaceted: to provide education on safety, current events, and ecology; to advocate for state and federal resources to maintain the lake's health and recreational appeal; and to celebrate the lake's beauty through community events.
Mission and Objectives
- Education: The association focuses on educating the public about the ecological importance of the lake and the need for responsible stewardship. This includes raising awareness about safety practices and current environmental issues affecting the lake.
- Advocacy: It advocates for policies and resources necessary to protect the lake's water quality and manage its ecosystem effectively. This involves collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure the long-term health of the lake.
- Celebration and Community Building: The association organizes events that celebrate the lake's natural beauty and foster community engagement. These events include cleanups and other activities that promote appreciation for the lake and its surroundings.
Activities and Events
One of the notable initiatives of the Watts Bar Lake Association is organizing seasonal cleanups. These events bring community members together to help maintain the lake's cleanliness and environmental integrity. Additionally, the association hosts meetings and gatherings that serve as forums for discussing community concerns and planning future activities.
Invasive Species Management
Watts Bar Lake faces significant challenges from invasive aquatic plants, such as Eurasian watermilfoil and hydrilla. These species can densely populate areas around boat docks, impeding access for recreational users. The association supports efforts to address these invasions through education and advocacy.
Environmental Concerns
The association also addresses broader environmental issues affecting the lake, including pollution and species management. For example, there have been concerns about preventing the invasion of silver carp and managing other ecological threats.
Role in the Community
By engaging the local community in environmental stewardship and conservation activities, the Watts Bar Lake Association plays a critical role in preserving the lake's recreational and ecological value. Through its efforts, it aims to ensure that Watts Bar Lake remains a vibrant and healthy resource for generations to come.
