Amigos, I am very humbled to partner with this fine organization on this pilot mariachi addition to TMEA’s online learning library for educators! Check it out! COURSE DESCRIPTION:The “son” is the traditional folk style of mariachi music and can be misunderstood byeducators who are new to the genre or don’t understand the mariachi’s rhythm section. Anymelodic phrasing is always layered on top of these foundations of interpretation by the rhythmsection. If the foundation is not sound it becomes very difficult or impossible to develop amature and authentic interpretation from the rest of the group. This 30min course covers the concept of “son”, the indigenous music of many regions ofMexico. It compares and contrasts four (4) different varieties: Son Jalisciense, SonMichoacano, Son Huasteco, and Son Jarocho— one of which (Son Jalisciense) is arequirement for the UIL and other region and state contests. Joe lectures and plays the rhythminstruments to express the ideas of phrasing, pacing, and timing as well as discuss thesimilarities and difference of these types of sones. The hope here is that educators new to the genre or are unfamiliar with the rhythm section willcome to understand these foundational concepts better so as to teach their students how tomore appropriately and more accurately phrase and interpret the “son”.
