Metropolitan Winds
Overview
Metropolitan Winds is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operating in the United States, specifically designated for educational and cultural purposes. Founded in 1993, the ensemble is composed of volunteer musicians who share a passion for performing a wide range of musical genres, including classical transcriptions, contemporary wind band literature, and popular culture-inspired works.
Mission and Activities
The organization seeks to provide a platform for wind, brass, and percussion musicians to hone their skills and contribute to the rich cultural landscape of the Dallas-Fort Worth area. By fostering a diverse community of musicians, Metropolitan Winds aims to enrich the lives of its members and the broader community through music.
Metropolitan Winds hosts approximately 6 to 7 concerts annually at various venues, including Little Elm High School, Christ United Methodist Church in Plano, and occasionally Moody Performance Hall in downtown Dallas. Their performances span multiple musical genres, showcasing both traditional and modern wind ensemble repertoire.
Membership and Auditions
Membership in Metropolitan Winds is open to musicians who demonstrate a strong commitment to musical excellence. Prospective members undergo a two-step audition process:
- Initial Participation: Potential members are invited to attend two rehearsals to assess their compatibility with the ensemble.
- Formal Audition: Following the rehearsals, they audition with the section leader and music director, performing two prepared excerpts that demonstrate musical sensitivity, technical ability, and overall musicianship.
Financial Structure
As a non-profit entity, Metropolitan Winds relies primarily on contributions and net fundraising events for its financial sustainability. The organization maintains no liabilities and holds a substantial amount of assets, ensuring its financial stability and continuity.
Leadership and Governance
The organization is led by its key officers, including the music director and executive team members who volunteer their time. The music director is the only compensated position within the leadership structure.
Programs and Concerts
Metropolitan Winds offers a diverse concert season, featuring programs that reflect a wide array of musical tastes. Past and upcoming concerts include themes inspired by movie scores, classical compositions, and festive holiday music. Their repertoire is designed to engage audiences across different age groups and musical preferences.
