The Austin Parks Foundation (APF) is a U.S. nonprofit organization committed to enhancing public parks, trails, and green spaces in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1992, APF partners with the local community to improve these areas through volunteerism, innovative programming, advocacy, and financial support. Its mission focuses on ensuring equitable access to quality parks for all Austinites.

History and Impact

Since its inception, the Austin Parks Foundation has invested over $80 million in Austin's parks. Annually, its flagship volunteer event, "It's My Park Day," generates an average of $650,000 in volunteer labor. The organization has also distributed over $3 million in community-initiated grants since 2006. APF is a presenting partner and beneficiary of the Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Metropolitan Park.

Projects and Programs

APF undertakes numerous projects each year, ranging from small park improvements to large-scale initiatives. Recent endeavors include restoring the Zilker Eagle mini train, a beloved family attraction in Zilker Park. The organization completed ten park improvement projects in 2023, providing over $220,000 in ACL Music Festival Grants to fund various community-identified enhancements.

Austin Parks Foundation offers various volunteer opportunities, including "It's My Park Day" and regular Open Workdays. In 2022, the organization coordinated over 9,000 volunteers across the city, completing 190 projects valued at $559,020. Additionally, APF hosts Corporate Volunteer Days, where companies can participate in custom projects to support local parks.

The foundation's board of directors ensures inclusive leadership practices and regular assessments. Austin Parks Foundation holds a 4/4 Star rating from Charity Navigator, reflecting its strong governance and financial accountability.

Financial Commitment

APF contributes 80 percent of every donated dollar directly to park projects and programs. This financial commitment underscores the organization's dedication to maximizing its impact on local parks and green spaces.
