Description

Colorado Council of Black Nurses Inc.

The Colorado Council of Black Nurses Inc. (CCBN) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, philanthropic organization dedicated to promoting equity in healthcare. Founded in May 1973 by a group of Black nurses, the organization focuses on improving healthcare for diverse communities through advocacy, education, and career development in nursing[1][4].

History and Mission

CCBN was established to address the low quality of healthcare provided to ethnic populations in the United States, particularly in Colorado. Its mission involves increasing the number of Black/African American professional nurses and enhancing college graduation rates among underrepresented students in postsecondary education. This aims to empower underserved communities to contribute equally to healthcare standards both locally and globally[1][4].

Activities and Initiatives

  • Health Education and Community Programs: CCBN has been instrumental in providing free health screenings, workshops on various health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and cancer prevention. The organization also coordinates mobile vaccination clinics and other community-based health initiatives[1].
  • Scholarships and Mentorship: Through its scholarship program, which has been supported since 1974, CCBN helps fund the education of aspiring nurses from underserved communities. This includes the newly introduced EXPANSE Aerospace Scholarship, focusing on aerospace nursing and space nursing[3].
  • Aerospace Nursing Department: CCBN has launched an Aerospace Nursing Department, researching methods to provide healthcare in space. This department collaborates with educational institutions to develop advanced degrees in aerospace nursing[2][3].

Global Impact

Beyond its local impact, CCBN influences global healthcare practices and supports educational initiatives in Africa, including starting nursing schools and supporting health clinics in several countries[1].

Achievements

CCBN's efforts have contributed to policy changes, such as advocating for tobacco and vaping bans and supporting the No Surprise Billing Act. The organization's influence extends beyond Colorado, impacting national and international healthcare standards[1].
