Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began after the Civil War to honor the soldiers who died in America’s bloodiest conflict. Communities would gather to place flowers on the graves of the fallen—a tradition of remembrance that spread across the country. In 1868, General John A. Logan officially declared May 30 as a day of remembrance, and for decades, Americans paused each spring to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. After World War I, the holiday evolved to commemorate all U.S. military personnel who died in service—not just Civil War soldiers. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May, giving Americans a long weekend to reflect, remember, and reunite. It’s more than the unofficial start of summer—it’s a time to visit cemeteries, attend parades, and recognize the brave individuals who gave their lives so others could live in freedom. This Memorial Day, let’s take a moment to honor the heroes who never came home. 🇺🇸 #ArchaeologyResearchInstitute #ARI #REXplore #PublicArchaeology #Explore #Preserve #Research #Educate #LBurg #Cincy #MemorialDay #HonorTheFallen #RememberAndRespect #HistoryMatters (fb)
