Description

Wildlife Habitat Council

The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and certifying biodiversity conservation and management on working lands. WHC focuses exclusively on the private sector, making it a unique leader in biodiversity conservation efforts globally.

Mission and Activities

WHC empowers companies to advance biodiversity, sustainability, employee engagement, and community relations goals. The organization achieves this through partnerships, education, and a wide array of consulting services tailored to meet business and biodiversity needs.

Certification

WHC Conservation Certification is the world's leading voluntary sustainability standard for biodiversity enhancement and conservation education on corporate landholdings. Established in 1989, this certification is recognized in 47 U.S. states and 19 countries. It serves as a benchmark for corporate conservation actions, providing benefits for both biodiversity and people.

Initiatives and Impact

WHC collaborates with corporations, NGOs, and government agencies to implement nature-based solutions that protect and enhance biodiversity. WHC-certified programs typically involve the creation of habitats such as grasslands, wetlands, water bodies, forests, and meadows, encouraging native plants and animals to thrive in these environments.

Recognition and Achievements

Several companies have achieved recognition through WHC certifications, such as Ashland and Solvay, which have implemented successful conservation projects at various sites. For instance, Solvay's Paulínia site in Brazil became the first chemical company in the country to achieve WHC Gold Certification, demonstrating how business and nature can coexist harmoniously.

Global Presence

WHC's international presence highlights its role in mainstreaming biodiversity across sectors, encouraging practical and locally relevant conservation projects that align with business operations without conflicting with them. This approach supports companies in integrating biodiversity into their business strategies and operations.
