Wilshire Center Business Improvement Corporation
The Wilshire Center Business Improvement Corporation (WCBIC) is a California-based nonprofit organization established to enhance the business environment and community quality in the Wilshire Center area of Los Angeles. The organization operates as the advisory board for the Wilshire Center Business Improvement District (WCBID), which was created by the Los Angeles City Council in 1995. The WCBID is one of over 40 business improvement districts (BIDs) in Los Angeles.
Mission and Activities
The mission of the WCBIC is to improve the social and economic environment of Wilshire Center by focusing on areas such as public safety, beautification, promotion, maintenance, and economic development. This includes advocating for the interests of local businesses and property owners. Key activities involve:
- Public Safety: Collaborating with the LAPD and other local security services to ensure a safer community. Officers have been involved in felony arrests and stopping crimes in progress[1].
- Beautification and Maintenance: Cleaning sidewalks and streets, removing graffiti, maintaining public planters, and repairing damaged public spaces[1][4].
- Community Engagement: Organizing outreach campaigns, managing community events, and working with city officials on issues impacting the local community[1].
- Economic Development: Supporting mixed-use development projects, improving traffic and parking infrastructure, and enhancing the overall attractiveness of the area for businesses and residents[3].
Financial Overview
The WCBIC is classified as a 501(c)(6) organization, which means it operates as a business league to improve local business conditions. Donations to the organization are not tax-deductible[2]. The corporation's primary revenue sources come from program services, with minimal income from investments or contributions[2].
Impact on the Community
Since its inception, the WCBIC has played a significant role in revitalizing the Wilshire Center area. It has contributed to a dramatic reduction in crime and an increase in property values. The opening of subway stations in the late 1990s further enhanced the area's appeal, attracting more businesses and residents[3]. The organization continues to work towards creating a vibrant urban community by promoting economic growth, safety, and environmental sustainability.
