Hawaiian Historical Society

This is the official Hawaiian Historical Society twitter page! Organized in January 1892, HHS preserves historical materials in its library and publishes scholarly research in the peer-reviewed Hawaiian Journal of History. The society is dedicated to preserving historical materials relating to Hawaii, and to publishing scholarly research on Hawaiian history, so present and future peoples throughout the world will recognize and appreciate the history of Hawaii. The society has established and maintains a secure and publicly accessible library of historical resource materials to support research, translation, and publication of significant historical information primarily about Hawaii and its people.

Hawaiian Historical Society

The Hawaiian Historical Society is a private non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rich historical heritage of Hawai'i. Established in 1892 by a group of prominent citizens, the society aims to collect, preserve, and present historical materials, publish scholarly research, and host public lectures focusing on the history of Hawai'i and the Pacific.

History

The society was founded under the leadership of its first president, Charles Reed Bishop, who also founded the Kamehameha Schools. Notable early members included historians Nathaniel Bright Emerson and Ralph Simpson Kuykendall, and Queen Lili‘uokalani was honored as the Patron of the Society. Another notable figure who served as President was Governor Sanford B. Dole.

Mission

The Hawaiian Historical Society's mission centers around three main objectives: preserve, present, and publish on the history of Hawai'i. This involves maintaining an extensive archive of photographs, books, newspapers, journals, and manuscripts that are made accessible to scholars and the public. Some of its notable collections include early voyages and travels, Hawaiian-language imprints, and historical maps.

Publications

The society publishes several notable publications:

  • The Hawaiian Journal of History: This annual peer-reviewed journal is the longest-running publication focused on Hawaiian history, covering both pre- and post-contact periods.
  • Annual Calendar: Identifies significant historical dates in Hawaiian history.
  • Nā Mea Kahiko: A newsletter that keeps members updated on the society's activities and research findings.
Library and Research

The library serves as a central research hub for scholars and history enthusiasts. It houses more than 12,000 volumes of books and pamphlets and over 35 linear feet of manuscripts, all cataloged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The library's collections are particularly strong on nineteenth-century Hawaiian and Pacific history. Library materials are accessible in a climate-controlled reading room by appointment only. Patrons can also obtain photocopies of materials and use microfilm and microfiche readers.

Programs and Events

The society engages in various public outreach activities:

  • Public Lectures: Regular lectures are organized featuring scholars and experts in Hawaiian history.
  • Member Events: Members receive invitations to exclusive events, lectures, and programs.
Membership

Support for the society comes from membership dues, donations, grants, and a modest endowment. Members benefit from receiving the Hawaiian Journal of History, the Nā Mea Kahiko newsletter, discounts on publications and services, and special invitations to events. Membership categories include student, senior, educator, librarian, regular, friend, sponsor, and lifetime members.

Impact

The Hawaiian Historical Society plays a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Hawaiian history, making its extensive resources available to both local and international researchers. Through its publications and programs, the society contributes significantly to the understanding and appreciation of Hawaiian and Pacific Island history.
