Hawaiian Historical Society

The Hawaiian Historical Society is a private non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rich historical heritage of Hawai'i. The society was founded under the leadership of its first president, Charles Reed Bishop, who also founded the Kamehameha Schools. Notable early members included historians Nathaniel Bright Emerson and Ralph Simpson Kuykendall, and Queen Lili‘uokalani was honored as the Patron of the Society. Another notable figure who served as President was Governor Sanford B. Dole.

The library's collections are particularly strong on nineteenth-century Hawaiian and Pacific history. Library materials are accessible in a climate-controlled reading room by appointment only. Patrons can also obtain photocopies of materials and use microfilm and microfiche readers.
