Hawaiian Historical Society

The Hawaiian Historical Society is a private non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rich historical heritage of Hawai'i. The society was founded under the leadership of its first president, Charles Reed Bishop, who also founded the Kamehameha Schools. Another notable figure who served as President was Governor Sanford B. Dole.

It houses more than 12,000 volumes of books and pamphlets and over 35 linear feet of manuscripts, all cataloged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The library's collections are particularly strong on nineteenth-century Hawaiian and Pacific history. Library materials are accessible in a climate-controlled reading room by appointment only. Patrons can also obtain photocopies of materials and use microfilm and microfiche readers.
