PROTESTRA
Orchestral ensemble of activist-minded musicians raising awareness about systemic social justice issues through the lens of classical music Orchestra bridging the divide between activism and classical music ✊🎶 PROTESTRA's mission is to highlight social justice issues through the context of classical music. Our benefit concerts bridge the divide between classical music and activism by centering around larger themes of social justice; including community-based hosts and guest speakers knowledgeable about these issues; presenting repertoire by underrepresented composers alongside those considered part of the classical canon; and raising funds for mission- and policy-driven organizations related to our concerts’ themes.
PROTESTRA
PROTESTRA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the United States, established to advocate for social justice through classical music. It is the only symphony orchestra in the U.S. that regularly produces benefit concerts focused on social justice causes since 2020.
History and Organization
First assembled in 2017, PROTESTRA was formally incorporated in 2020. It operates as a volunteer-run organization, committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, representation, and accessibility in its hiring and programming practices. The organization's leadership includes its Founder and Artistic Director, as well as a Co-founder and Director of Operations who serves as Chairman of the Board. The team also includes experienced musicians and nonprofit professionals who contribute to the organization's mission.
Activities and Programs
PROTESTRA organizes benefit concerts that integrate classical music performances with multimedia educational components. These events aim to inspire activism by highlighting specific social justice themes and issues. The organization channels audience donations to support mission-driven groups related to the concert themes. Notable events include "Music in Action: A Concert for Aid," which raised over $21,000 for emergency relief in Gaza.
Fundraising and Support
PROTESTRA relies heavily on donations from individual contributors, making it a grassroots organization not beholden to large external funding sources. Supporters can contribute through one-time donations, monthly memberships, or season sponsorships. Every donation supports the production of benefit concerts, performer compensation, company growth, and operational costs. The organization aims to create a model for a 21st-century classical music entity that serves and is supported by its community.
Mission and Impact
PROTESTRA seeks to create a new vision for classical music that emphasizes social responsibility. By bridging the divide between classical music and activism, the organization aims to drive societal change through the power of art. Its mission includes uplifting diverse artistic voices, advocating for important social causes, and promoting a more equitable future for classical music.

They share a passion for harnessing the power of art and culture to affect broader societal change. Members of the team are involved in various capacities, from performance and teaching to operations and advocacy.

Help us get to $6k for the ACLU Foundation. 💸 We chose to support them with our recent concert because of their essential work holding our federal administration accountable in court during a time of blatant government overreach and disregard for civil rights. They are currently litigating cases involving: ⚖️ Gerrymandering in Alabama and Louisiana ⚖️ An executive order that would usurp the power to regulate federal elections from Congress and the states ⚖️ Deportations under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 ⚖️ Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident who is currently being detained in federal prison for his political views and participation in pro-Palestinian protests Help us maximize our post-concert gift to them with a final contribution before we close out the campaign.

Concert fundraiser update ➡️ $4035 raised so far for the ACLU Foundation. 🎉 We have our wonderful musicians to thank: not only for their beautiful playing, but also because many of them generously donated their honorarium fees to our partner charity, boosting the total amount raised by an additional $1700. 🙏 We’re genuinely inspired by the community of artists who join us for every concert— musicians who are passionate about using art to speak out against injustice and to make a tangible difference for causes that matter.
