Beefmaster Breeders United
Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) is a US nonprofit organization designated as a 501(c)(5) labor, agricultural, and horticultural organization. It serves to enhance the efficiency and productivity of Beefmaster cattle breeders.
History and Purpose
BBU was founded in 1961 and is focused on promoting the Beefmaster cattle breed, which was developed by Tom Lasater in the early 20th century. The breed was created through a systematic crossing of Hereford, Shorthorn, and Brahman cattle, with the aim of producing more productive cattle that could thrive in harsh environments like South Texas. The philosophy behind the Beefmaster breed is based on six essential traits: Disposition, Fertility, Weight, Conformation, Milk Production, and Hardiness. These traits were intended to make the cattle economically viable even during difficult economic times.
Activities and Services
BBU offers various services to its members, including cattle evaluations, registration services, and educational programs. The organization is transitioning towards digital processes, aiming to enhance efficiency and accessibility in cattle registrations and transfers. This transition includes a fully digital system for these processes, offering members 24/7 access to manage their registrations and transfers.
Membership and Impact
BBU is among the top five largest beef breed registries in the United States by membership and ranks in the top ten in registrations. The organization has experienced significant growth over the years, particularly from the early 1970s, when the breed expanded rapidly beyond its origins in South Texas.
Classification
As a 501(c)(5) organization, Beefmaster Breeders United focuses on educational and instructive activities within the agricultural sector, aiming to improve working conditions and efficiency. Donations to the organization are not tax-deductible.
